Fuck the duck until exploded

Daily Life Humor: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

干炸鸭子 (gān zhà yā zi)

Means: Dry-fried duck / Deep-fried duck

Example: "I just wanted a quiet dinner, but the menu told me to fuck the duck until exploded."

📖 Origin Story

This phrase is arguably the undisputed king of Chinese restaurant menu translation fails. It originated in the early 2000s from a popular dish called Dry-fried Duck (Gān zhà yāzi), which was butchered by early, primitive machine translation software.

The disaster stems from two characters:

  • “干” (gān / gàn): Pronounced in the first tone, it means “dry.” But in the fourth tone, it is an informal verb meaning “to do”—or in vulgar slang, the F-word.
  • “炸” (zhà): While it means “to deep-fry” in cooking, its primary meaning in everyday language is “to explode” or “bomb.”

When the software combined the F-word with “duck” and “explode,” a humble traditional poultry dish was transformed into an R-rated culinary warning.

🤓 Analysis & Usage

Grammatically and morally, the English sentence sounds like an instruction for a surreal, violent crime scene rather than a cooking technique. Despite Beijing’s massive campaign to clean up public translations before the 2008 Olympics, this phrase became an immortal internet meme.

Today, it is widely used in humor discussions as the textbook example of why context-aware translation is essential, and it remains a favorite collectible item on souvenir T-shirts and novelty postcards.
